"How long will it take?" is one of the first questions every client asks. It's also one of the most difficult to answer precisely, because tattoo time depends on an unusual combination of factors — the design, the style, the placement, the artist's speed, and how your skin responds on the day. This guide gives you a realistic framework for estimating session time.

The Factors That Determine Tattoo Time

Size

The most obvious factor. A 3cm symbol takes 30–60 minutes. A 15cm detailed piece takes 3–5 hours. A full sleeve takes 25–40+ hours spread across multiple sessions. Size correlates directly with time — but it's not the only variable.

Complexity and Detail

A 10cm solid black shape takes less time than a 10cm detailed portrait. The number of distinct elements, the fineness of linework, and the level of detail in shading all add time. Highly intricate work slows an artist down — and it should. Rushing detail is what produces bad work.

Style

Different tattoo styles have different time profiles:

Placement

Some areas of the body are harder to tattoo than others, which adds time:

Your Skin on the Day

Skin condition affects how quickly ink takes. Well-hydrated, well-moisturised skin accepts ink more readily than dry, dehydrated skin. If you've been unwell recently, drunk heavily the night before, or are sunburned, the skin may not take ink as cleanly, which requires more passes and more time. Proper preparation genuinely makes a difference.

Session Length: How Long Can You Sit?

Most clients can sit comfortably for 3–4 hours. After that, pain tolerance typically decreases significantly, skin quality for tattooing degrades, and focus from both client and artist drops. Many experienced artists won't do sessions longer than 5–6 hours for quality reasons, regardless of how large the piece is.

For large projects, multiple shorter sessions always produce better results than marathon single sessions. Rested skin accepts ink better, and an artist working on fresh canvas produces sharper work than one working on fatigued, irritated skin.

Can I estimate session time from my reference image?

Roughly yes — but your artist's assessment at consultation is more reliable. The same image tattooed at different sizes, in different styles, by artists with different speeds, can take anywhere from 1 hour to 8 hours. Share your reference with us via WhatsApp for a better estimate before you book.

What happens if we don't finish in one session?

You book a second session — that's all. Large pieces being split across sessions is completely normal and often produces better results than trying to push through. We'll plan the splits at your consultation so you know what to expect before you start.

How long do I need to wait between sessions on the same piece?

At minimum 4–6 weeks, ideally 8 weeks. The skin needs to fully heal before the artist works over the same area again. Working on unhealed skin produces inconsistent results and causes unnecessary trauma. Patience between sessions is part of getting a great large-scale tattoo.
